Bus 174
Dir. Jose Padilha Brazil 2002
Bus 174 tells the harrowing account of a bus hijacking in Rio de Janiero by an orphaned street kid, Sandro do Nascimento. What started as a simple robbery turned into a day-long hostage situation. Director Padilha analyzes the have and have-nots in Rio, in particular Nascimento's tragic background, which includes seeing his mother brutally murdered as a young boy, as well as drug abuse and the violent life of the streets. Padilha intercuts this with the incredibly tense television footage (broadcast live on TV in Rio) which will leave you feeling like you have been held hostage as well. Also included are interviews with hostages, law enforcement officers, journalists and friends and family of the hijacker. Bus 174, a real-life City of God(playing 6/4&6/5), is a prismatic analysis of how one man's personal crisis became a national news phenomenon. (subtitled;120m)
