Dir. Jim Sheridan US 2002
Director Jim Sheridan
(My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father)
and his two daughters, Kristen & Naomi,
co-wrote this Academy Award nominated screenplay, based loosely on their
own story of emigrating from Ireland to N.Y. Johnny (Paddy Considine) and
Sarah (Samantha Morton) are the young couple who settle with their two
daughters in a pre-Giuliani Hell's Kitchen inhabited by drug addicts and
transvestites. Johnny drives a cab to make ends meet while he auditions
for acting jobs. He is haunted by the death of his young son in Ireland, and
his emotional absence leaves Sarah to plead with him to try and be happy for the girls'
sake. The two girls' (played by real-life sisters Emma and Sarah Bolger) world
changes when they befriend a mysterious artist, the downstairs neighbor Matteo
(Djimon Hounsou). In America is the Sheridan family valentine to N.Y., a
city that may not embrace but certainly doesn't
deny anyone. (107m)
