| Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer |
Dir. Nick Broomfield & Joan Churchill US/GB 2004
Director Nick Broomfield has certainly mined the battlefield of celebrity time bombs
(Heidi Fleiss, Courtney Love, Biggie & Tupac). Long before Charlize Theron
glammed herself down to portray Alieen Wuornos in Monster, Broomfield had
explored her life in an earlier documentary. His new film, Alieen: Life and Death
of a Serial Killer picks up where his first film left off. At the time
Wuornos confessed to the crimes she was accused of, her mental state was questionable.
In a private conversation with Broomfield she maintains her self-defense
claim, but admits she is tired of living (for 15 years) on death row.
The state (governed by Jeb Bush) gladly accepts her confession and sets
a date for the execution. In this film we learn much about her childhood,
family instability and abuse as well as the social forces and media circus that helped to create a
"monster". (90m)
