| Dogtown and Z-Boys |
Dir. Stacy Peralta US 2002
Dogtown and Z-Boys chronicles the 70's Southern California skateboard
culture from its origins and gives us an insider's look at what would become
a national fashion and youth movement. The film chronicles a gang of surfers
from Dogtown, a rundown section of Santa Monica and Venice, who are known as
Z-Boys, after their hangout, the Zephyr Surf Shop. This ragged clan of
multi-ethnic kids, including one girl, takes to the streets with their
homemade skateboards riding canyon hills and paved playgrounds when the
ocean waves are too low to surf. After a drought left many L.A. area
swimming pools dry, the Z-Boys went pool-hopping with their boards bringing
the sport of skating into a whole new realm. Peralta combines interviews
with original Dogtowners and archival footage to create a spectacular and
informative look at how a group of kids who had everything against them
created a cultural phenomenon. Narrated by Sean Penn. (90m)
