| The Piano Teacher |
Dir. Michael Haneke France 2001
This intelligent, raw masterpiece probes the dark recesses of the mind of a
sadomasochist piano teacher who lives with her aging mother in a strange,
abusive relationship. Profes-sor Erika Kohul (Isabelle Huppert) maintains
her stern facade at a top Viennese academy, but leads a secret life of
self-mutilation and degradation. Into her life walks a handsome and insolent
young student (Benoit Magimel) who wants to be her lover. Instead of being
seduced by his charms, she hands him a multi-paged, single-spaced outline of
her kinky erotic demands. Hoping to win her over, he tries to comply, with
devastating results. Huppert manages to bring this appalling but believable
character to life in this genuinely shocking film that is not for the faint
of heart. (130m)
