| Nine Queens |
D. Fabian Bielinsky Argentina 2001
Shot in modern day Buenos Aires, Nine Queens is an elegant and sly deadpan
comedy. Marcos (Ricardo Darin), an experienced con man, meets the younger
Juan (Gaston Paul,) and offers to take him on as his protégé after seeing
him perform an old flim-flam routine on a naive clerk. Their goal is a
lucrative swindle involving the ‘Nine Queens', an expensive but forged sheet
of stamps, which, if they can sell to their mark, Gandolfo, will be the Big
One in their careers. Valeria, Marcos' beautiful and complicated sister,
becomes involved when Marcos asks her to sleep with Gandolfo as part of the
deal. With a tightly woven plot and well-drawn characters, Nine Queens is
the ultimate sting movie. There is a con within a con within a con and the
audience is kept off balance, never quite sure who's scamming whom, until
the very satisfying end. (In Spanish w/English subtitles; 115m)
