| The Cockettes |
Dir. Bill Weber & David Weissman US 2002
This bittersweet ‘fairy' tale of a lost San Francisco - a time when glitter,
sexuality, politics and gender flowed as freely as the drugs- documents the
famed SF drag performance troupe, The Cockettes, in all their thrift shop
finery. Using beautiful archival footage and interviews with surviving
Cockettes and their admirers, the film follows the highs and lows of the
troupe from their early days as a bunch of stoned hippie queens to their
split with their messianic leader, Hibiscus, and their infamous performances
in NYC. The Cockettes influence on everything drag is profound. They
flourished during a utopian time in SF (the late 1960's and early 70's) but
by decade's end, hard drugs, AIDS and a national conservatism would leave it
a fading memory... until now. (82m)
