An epic musical and Oscar nominee for Best Foreign film, Lagaan, stars
Indian superstar Aamir Khan. The year is 1893 and India is under British
occupation. In a small village, the tyrannical Captain Russell has imposed
an unprecedented land tax (lagaan) on its citizens. Outraged, Bhuvan (Khan),
a rebellious young farmer, rallies the villagers to publicly oppose the tax
and challenge the captain to a bet. If the villagers can beat the British
soldiers at a game of cricket Russell will forgive the lagaan for the next
three years. If they lose, the lagaan will be tripled. Lagaan is the most
expensive Indian film to date and one of the most technically ambitious in
Bollywood history. (225m)
