Dir. Charles Herman-Wurmfeld US 2002
If the characters in Sex and the City swung both ways you might get
something like Kissing Jessica Stein. Living in the New York City straight
world of singles purgatory, Jessica (Jennifer Westfeldt) can't seem to meet
anyone who isn't either a drug addict or macho pig. When a co-worker reads a
singles ad out loud quoting Rilke, Jessica's ears perk up- the only catch is
it's a woman seeking woman ad. On the sly Jessica answers the ad and meets
Helen (Heather Juergensen). The two hit it off famously and as in all
romantic comedies the obvious binary is created - the neurotic, uptight
Jessica and the hipper, sexually confident Helen try to make this
relationship work. Adapted from a stage play also written and performed by
Westfeldt and Juergensen, Kissing Jessica Stein is directed by Charles
Herman-Wurmfeld who cut his teeth in the underground SF theater scene of the
early 90s. The film touches on issues of sexual experimentation, coming out
to family and friends and the prejudice against same sex unions. (96m)
