| Dogville |
Dir.Lars Von Trier US 2004
Von Trier (Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark) examines small
town hypocrisy in this depression era tale of an isolated community. Tom Edison (Paul Bettany),
who fancies himself the conscience of Dogville, discovers Grace, (Nicole Kidman) a young women
escaping a dangerous past. The ŗgood" people of Dogville decide to harbor the fugitive but in
time their true-colors are exposed. The men in town brutalize her, the women castigate her
as a whore and Tom, who professes his love for her, sits by without intervening. Only when
the gangsters arrive back in town will Gracešs fate truly be decided. Told in nine chapters
with a prologue, complete with narrator and a set composed only of a chalk drawing,
Dogville comes off like the dark side of Thorton Wilderšs
classic tale, Our Town. (178m)
