| The Saddest Music in the World |
Dir.Guy Maddin Canada 2004
Guy Maddin makes his most
accessible film to date without losing any of his
absurdist sensibility. The setting is the depths of
the depression era in wintery Winnipeg, Canada. Lady
Port-Huntly (Isabella Rossellini), is a power hungry
glamourpuss and a double amputee whose prosthetic
limbs are filled with beer. In order to boost business
at her brewery she decides to hold a competition to
find the country with the saddest music in the world.
Among the contestants is Chester Kent (Mark McKinney)
a failed Broadway producer who could really use the $25,000 prize,
and his nymphomaniac, amnesiac girlfriend. Beautifully filmed
in flickering black and white, Maddin's signature style, which
pays tribute to silent films, screwball comedies and Busby Berkely
musicals, is the perfect platform for this hilarious satire. (99m)
