| The Twilight Samurai |
Dir. Yoji Yamada Japan 2004
Set in the 19th Century, Twilight Samurai
is a quiet contemplative story about a young widower samurai Seibei
Iguchi (Hiroyuki Sanada), who must care for two young daughters and an
ailing mother. Seibei returns home to tend to his fields and family after
working all day in a warehouse and becomes known to his co-workers as ėtwilight Seibei.
Although seemingly content to remain unmarried, Seibei takes comfort in
the company of Tomoe, a childhood friend who has recently left her
abusive husband, Koda. When Koda demands to have a duel with the samurai,
Seibei defeats him by using only a stick. The news of his victory spreads
quickly, and when political unrest between rival clans breaks out the destiny
of these star-crossed lovers becomes threatened.
