Dir. Lukas Moodysson Sweden 2000
It's 1975 and the setting is a swinging Swedish commune where a group of
hairy hippies and righteous politicos attempt to live together despite constant
bickering and debates about political correctness. Moodysson nails stereotypes; a banker's son
turned communist; a lonely gay guy with a Sandra Dee flip; a newly converted, militant lesbian;
and a big-bearded, gentle soul who suffers in an open relationship. Then, strangers to this hippie c
ulture, Elizabeth and her two children, arrive after having left their drunken husband/father. Men,
women and children pair off together to the sound of ABBA. Moodysson manages to keep us laughing
at the oddballs while still envying their companionship and utopian ideals. (106m)
