Dir. Catherine Breillat France 2001
France's bad girl Catherine Breillat (Romance) has sex on her mind again
in her latest film, Fat Girl, a study of opposites. The film focuses on the
relationship between two sisters, the overweight Anais (Anais Reboux) and
the older nymphet Elena (Roxane Mesquida) who are on summer vacation with
their family. While the sulky Elena is turning heads, Anais flounders around
the pool creating an imaginary world of her own. Into their lives steps
Fernando (Libero De Rienzo), a handsome Italian student who begins to seduce
Elena. Anais is forced to witness the entire seduction, which painfully
unfolds in front of her. Misogyny or revisionist feminism? Fat Girl will
leave you asking more questions than it answers. (84m)
