Dir. Steven Shainberg US 2002 Adapted from a Mary Gaitskill short story, Secretary stars Maggie Gyllenhaal as Lee Holloway, a woman who has just been released from a psychiatric institution. Back at home she realizes that her family is as dysfunctional as her fellow inmates have been, which triggers the relapse of her favorite past-time, self-mutilation. Lee's S/M proclivities are shared by her new boss, Mr. Grey (James Spader) and the two carry on a dance of dominance and submission in the workplace. When Lee realizes her typos will incite a spanking she starts misspelling on purpose. Mr. Grey is fearful of his growing attachment to Lee, which produces self-loathing and blurs the line between their sexual role-playing. Secretary is a surreal fairytale of untraditional romance and outsider sexuality. (104m) |
