| Standing in the Shadows of Motown |
Dir Paul Justman US 2002
In 1959, Berry Gordy gathered the best musicians from Detroit's thriving jazz and
blues scene to begin cutting songs for his new record company, Hitsville USA. Over a
fourteen-year period the Funk Brothers were the house musicians behind all the Motown stars,
from the Supremes and the Temptations to Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. By
the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number
one hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - making them the
greatest hit machine in the history of pop music. The film interlaces interviews and anecdotes from
surviving members of the Funk Brothers with archival footage, flashback sequences and performances
by contemporary artists. With the tumultuous 60's as a backdrop, the Funk Brothers trace the evolution of 'The Motown Sound'
from its roots in Detroit to its demise in L.A. in the 70's. Featuring the Funk Brothers with Joan Osborne, Ben Harper,
Me'shell NdegeOcello, Chaka Khan, and Bootsy Collins. (108m)
