Dir. Lone Scherfig Denmark 2000
An Italian class becomes a focal point for a group of
diverse characters who live in the same
Copenhagen neighborhood. Learning a new language
becomes not just an escape from the tedium and tragedies
in their lives but the chance for new beginnings. As a
Dogma 95 film (the first by a woman director), the
actors are all unknowns who play their roles with
refreshing humor and warmth as well as believability.
And, despite the fact that it contains "romance"
(and some sex) and "comedy", it defies that
genre by somehow remaining unsentimental. When
the class goes to Italy the unfolding events are made
all the more enjoyable by the stunning backdrops
of Venice. (Danish & Italian w/subtitles; 112m)
