| Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme |
Dir. Kevin Fitzgerald US
The Hip-Hop Film Festival and the Center For Hip-Hop Education present special
benefit screenings of this work-in-progress documentary. Explosively
tracing the story of a group of underground hip-hop MCs from the mid-80s
to the present day, the film explores the world of improvisational rap
as a modern day incarnation of the tradition of African-American storytelling
called Rap. Shot over a period of more than seven years (and still counting)
by student filmmakers, the story is told by way of two rival MC's,
MC Supernatural & Craig-G, both legends in the hip-hop underground
who battled off and on during the mid to early 90's. Their tale provides
the backdrop by which we explore this seldom seen world: a land where
artists re-appropriate English and create a new language of personal
and socio-economic empowerment. Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme is the first
American film to counter false notions of hip-hop's erroneous negative and
overly aggressive image. It provides an authentic look into the spiritual
life, educational benefits, and historical culture of hip-hop music today.
Also featuring Mos Def, Freestyle Fellowship, Black Thought, Cut Chemist,
Jucie, Planet Asia, Medusa, and The Living Legends.(74m)
