| Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind |
Dir. Michel Gondry US 2004
Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman's brilliance (Being John Malkovitch, Adaptation)
is in creating completely alternative universes. Eternal Sunshine, like Malkovitch,
is, literally, a head trip that takes us into the murky depths of the human mind.
The story unfolds a la Memento, starting at the end and rewinding. On a
blustery winter day, Clementine (Kate Winslet) and Joel (Jim Carrey)
meet on a beach and begin an affair. But what they don't remember
is that they've already met, fallen in love and split painfully apart.
Moving backwards in time, we find out they have employed the services of
a sleazy brainwashing company to scrub away all memories of each other.
Halfway through the procedure, however, Joel changes his mind and a
truly surreal chase ensues inside of his brain. Joel and Clementine
fight to hold on to the memory of each other, as the sands of time
are literally running out and the world crumbles around them.
