| Summer, Spring, Fall, Winter and Spring |
Dir.Kim Ki-duk Korea 2003
The seasons in the title of t
his meditative film mark the stages in a monk's life
and his move towards spiritual transcendence. The story
takes place entirely on a fog-shrouded mountain lake where
a floating temple is the timeless setting for a rite of
passage enacted by two monks. The old master imparts many
lessons to his young protÈgÈ, including a difficult one
about the nature of sorrow and guilt. When the boy grows up,
he falls in love with a girl and runs off to the outside world
to be with her. Eventually, damaged by jealous rage and violence,
he returns to the temple seeking peace. With stunning cinematography
that captures the tranquility of the surroundings, Spring, Summer... is a poetic study
of the battle between youthful recklessness and enlightened wisdom. (Subtitled) (103m)
