| Mayor of the Sunset Strip |
Dir. George Hicken-Iooper US 2004
Life is a rock and the radio rolled him.
Mayor of the Sunset Strip tells the story of LA rock DJ and elfin impresario Rodney
"on the ROQ" Bingenheimer. Rodney, part Andy Warhol and part Davey Jones, has seen
it all, met everyone and kickstarted many careers by giving them radio play when
no one else in LA would. Who else would consider Sonny & Cher surrogate parents
and hob-nob with the likes of David Bowie, the Ramones, X, Courtney Love and everyone in between?
Although close to fame, the riches certainly haven't rubbed off on Rodney, who
lives in a tiny apartment surrounded by his memorabilia and is relegated to the
midnight to 3 a.m. shift on KROQ-FM. Mayor of the Sunset Strip is a fascinating
history lesson of pop music and a poignant look at one
man's obsession with the cult of celebrity. (94m)
