| The Revolution Will Not Be Televised |
Dir. Kim Bartley & Donnacha O'Briain Ireland 2003
This amazing documentary began when two Irish filmmakers went to Venezuela in
2002 to make a film about the President, Hugo Chavez. Four months into
their filming, a larger, more complex event began to unfold. Chavez,
elected by a healthy majority, was hated by many in the upper-middle
class because of his outspoken views on reforming the country's corrupt
oil industry. His opposition also had strong ties to the Bush administration,
whose foreign policies Chavez openly criticized. When an anti-Chavez
demonstration was staged by the opposition, his supporters came
to his defense and chaos broke out. With the opposition spinning
the news, the Chavez supporters were blamed for the violence.
Because the filmmakers had unlimited access to the drama, this
eyewitness reportage of the coup and the counter coup is of
enormous historic importance and will make you question everything
your own corporate-controlled media chooses to feed you. (74m)
