This eye-popping anime employs the latest digital technology
to create a vividly detailed cityscape in a wild elaboration on
the1926 Fritz Lang film. Based on the classic manga by Osamu
Tezuka and written by the anime legend Otomo (Akira), Metropolis
portrays a retro-future world where humans exploit robot workers.
The evil mastermind Duke Red has employed a mad scientist to build
a lifelike robot named Tima with which he can control humanity.
But Tima gets loose and it's up to a detective's assistant,
Kinichi, to protect her. Their odyssey takes them to the city's
lower depths where the downtrodden robots live, work and plan an
uprising. Accompanied by a swing-era soundtrack, the result
is highly original. (Original Japanese version with English subtitles; 107m)
