Dir. Sandi Simcha DuBowski US 2001
Trembling Before G-D deals with gay Orthodox
and Hasidic Jews who try to keep their
faith even though the Torah specifically expresses
abhorrence to homosexuality. The subjects interviewed
include Steven Green-berg, the first openly gay Orthodox
rabbi who runs a support group for Orthodox gay men;
a lesbian couple who wish that they could celebrate
Passover with their families; British Mark who tries
to juggle orthodoxy and drag, and "Devorah", an
Israeli Orthodox wife who speaks of her
hidden Lesbian identity. Many of those
interviewed are shot in silhouette to
conceal their identities. The question
remains: why do people feel
the need to be accepted into a
culture that is hostile to their nature? (84m)
