Gangs Of New York
Dir.Martin Scorsese US 2003
Gangs of New York, loosely based on Herbert Asbury's journalistic account of lower Manhattan in the late 1800's, includes political/police corruption, racism, exploitation of the poor, xenophobia, street protests, religious fervor, fear among the populace and turf wars. Some things never change. It took Scorsese over 20 years to bring his vision, an epic drama showing early New York's seething underbelly, to the screen. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Amsterdam Vallon, a young Irishman who has a score to settle with Bill "the Butcher" (Daniel Day Lewis), leader of the Nativists, a gang of Protestant descendents of the original Anglo-Dutch settlers. Vallon, whose identity is unknown to Bill, quickly falls into his gang and lays in wait to seek revenge. With Cameron Diaz and John C.Reilly. (168m)
