Dir.Fernando Meirelles Brazil 2002
City of God, based on the semi-autobiographic novel by Paulo Lins,
is a remarkably accomplished debut feature by Brazilian filmmaker
Fernando Meirelles. The title refers to a section of Rio that is
a sprawling slum governed by gangs and drug dealers, mostly children.
The film's narrator, Rocket (Alexander Rodrigues) has remained on the
fringe of much of the violence but recollects how many of his friends
have been dragged into the crossfire. The film takes place over three
decades (60's, 70's 80's) and is told using flashbacks and flashforwards.
It's an extremely violent, energy-packed complex narrative that packs a
kinetic wollop reminiscent of Tarantino, Scorsese and Tom Tykwer.
When Rocket says that the City of God is "far from the picture postcard of Rio de Janeiro",
he's not kidding. This is a place where gangs seem to gobble each other up
like animals in the food chain. (130m)
