The power of music to unite, motivate and console is at the heart of this
documentary which took home the Audience Award and Freedom of Expression
Award at Sundance last year. Amandla! is a cinematic tribute to the protest
music that was integral to more than 40 years of resistance against apartheid
in South Africa. Through a combination of archival news footage,
interviews with famous musicians and former political prisoners,
and live performances of seminal songs, we get a sense of what
life was like for black South Africans under apartheid. Amandla!
(which means power) captures the energy and raw courage of
a people deeply united in their insistence for political change. (108m)
