| Touching the Void |
Dir. Kevin Macdonald GB 2004
Touching the Void is based on the book by Joe Simpson,
in which he recounts his experiences climbing a peak in the Peruvian Andes
in 1985. Simpson and his climbing partner, Simon Yates, set out to
climb the west face of Siula Grande (20,000 feet) which had never been
scaled before. The film includes interviews with the two climbers and
uses actors to dramatize the events that they endured. Making the
ascent in only 3 days seemed like a good omen for the two but, as we
learn in the film, 80% of climbing accidents happen on descent. In this
case, the descent went very badly indeed. Because the two are re-telling
their story we know what the outcome is, but the brilliance of Touching the Void is
that the audience is held in suspense the entire time and the dramatizations
are so vivid that you feel like you are experiencing their harrowing trials with them. (106m)
