Dir. Patty Jenkins US 2004
This stunning debut by director Patty Jenkins presents a fictionalized version of
real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute executed in 2002
for killing seven men in Florida during the 1980's. While on death
row, Wuornos was the subject of two documentaries by Nick Broomfield,
focusing on the brutal circumstances of her childhood and the exploitation
of her case. Monster takes as its jumping off point the doomed love affair
that ultimately led to her downfall. Aileen's fate is sealed when she
meets Selby (Christina Ricci), a lonely and naive 18 year-old, sent
to Florida to live with relatives to be 'cured' of her lesbianism. Aileen,
desperate and on the edge of suicide, dives headfirst into this newfound love and becomes Selby's
protector and provider, with tragic results. Charlize Theron's
Academy Award winning performance and physical transformation into a character
boiling over with rage is amazing. Instead of objectifying Aileen, the only female
serial killer in recent American history, the film presents the human behind the monstrous crimes. (109m)
