Greendale
Dir. Bernard Shakey US 2003
Grunge/folk icon Neil Young, under the pseudonym Bernard Shakey, cooks up a folk musical that deals with political corruption, war, environmental issues and media exploitation. Shot in grainy super 8 near Young's Woodside California home, the narrative of the film is a song-cycle from his album Greendale which is lip-synched by the "actors", Young's real life neighbors. The low-tech, inventive style is a unique soap box from which Young, a durable and inventive artist, throws strong barbs at the political powers that be. (90m)
