| Good Bye Lenin! |
Dir. Wolfgang Becker Ger 2003
Hailed as Best European Film at the Berlin Film Festival,
Good Bye, Lenin! is a nostalgic look at life in the East under
the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It's 1989 and Alex (Daniel Buhl)
lives with his sister and devoutly socialist mother in East Berlin. Unexpectedly,
his mother falls into a coma, and wakes up eight months later in a
very different world indeed. While she slept the Berlin Wall was
torn down, and before you can say 'unbridled capitalism' her daughter
is happily working the drive-thru window at Burger King. Because of his mothers'
delicate condition, Alex does everything he can to protect her
from the shock of these historical events, and he concocts elaborate schemes
to convince her that her beloved GDR still exists. Good Bye, Lenin! is a
symbolic funeral for life under the GDR, not as it actually existed,
but for the one some East Germans must have wished for. (121m)
