Dir. Silvio Soldini Italy 2000
Bread & Tulips is a film about a woman's search for
self-fulfillment among the routine habits and responsibilities of everyday
life. Rosalba (Licia Maglietta) is on vacation with her husband and
two teenage sons when the tour-bus leaves her at a rest stop.
Rather than take the next bus, she impulsively hitchhikes to Venice,
where she finds a job, a place to live and, gradually, the part of herself
she had lost. By the time her husband tracks her down (in a farcical scene reminiscent
of Jacques Tati) she's not sure she wants to go back to the life she left.
Bruno Ganz plays the suicidal waiter who kindly puts her up for the night. (subtitled;105m)
