Dir. Richard Linklater US 2001
What may be the year's most dynamic film is set entirely in a cramped motel
room. Synthesizing the best parts of Mamet, Rashoman and No
Exit, director Linklater's (Slacker, Waking Life) latest is an
exquisitely crafted pressure-cooker in which three friends
reconvene to recall their shared past. However, it's clear that
they have fiercely different memories of their shared history. Although
Amy (Uma Thurman) is now a district attorney, it's soon evident that it's
actually Vince the volunteer fireman/drug dealer (Ethan Hawke) who is
set to prosecute. Truth and guilt slip and slide like fish on a wet
deck until an illicitly recorded conversation may finally reveal which characters'
version of events is definitive. (86m)
