Dir. Gore Verbinski US 2002
The Ring opens with a familiar scene: Two schoolgirls are hanging out in a bedroom,
giggling, and talking about favorite teenage topics: boys and urban legends. Have
you heard the one about the video tape that after you watch it the phone will ring
and a voice will tell you that you will die in seven days? Soon a phone rings and
the giggling stops. Enter reporter/single mother Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts of
Mulholland Drive) What begins for Rachel as an opportunity to pursue a Pulitzer, plunges
instead into a race against time to save herself and all others heedless
enough to watch the cursed video tape. The final twist is the best since Sixth
Sense. Adapted from the Japanese cult film, this eerie film boasting great
cinematography is certainly one that you don't want to watch on video. (115m)
