| Punch-Drunk Love |
Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson US 2002
P.T. Anderson forgoes the excesses of his previous films (Boogie Nights, Magnolia), despite the presence of
Philip Seymour Hoffman, and re-invents the romantic comedy with Punch Drunk Love. This is not the light-hearted
film it was marketed as - something you might see J-Lo and Ben in - but instead a darkly surreal vision.
Adam Sandler plays Barry Egan, his usual man-child, but this time with an anger management problem.
The only boy in a family of seven sisters who badger him unmercifully, Barry is a social
misfit who runs a decorative toilet plunger business. Emily Watson plays the woman who wants to love him.
Why? She has her own issues to work out. Cited on many critics Ten Best lists, Punch Drunk Love might
not be the chick flick you thought it was but that's exactly the reason to see it. (95m)
