| 8 Mile |
Dir. Curtis Hanson US 2002
(110m)
The bad white boy of rap, Eminem attempts to widen his fan base (I guess Elton John wasn't enough)
with his latest foray into film. 8 Mile refers to 8 Mile Road, the east-west street that divides the
largely black city of Detroit from its largely white northern suburbs. It is also a semi-autobiographical
tale of a kid, Marshall Mathers aka Eminem as Jimmy Smith Jr. aka Rabbit,
trying to break out of his dead-end existence. An alcoholic mother (Kim Basinger), her abusive
boyfriend, a pregnant ex-girlfriend and a crappy job can only lead to fantasies of a recording
contract and life outside the trailer park. At his first public appearance at a predominantly black
club, Rabbit chokes and is heckled by the crowd, but as in all great come-back stories,
(think Rocky and Purple Rain), Rabbit eventually finds his voice. With Brittany Murphy, De'Angelo Wilson,
Mekhi Phifer.
