Balseros
Dirs. Carles Bosch & Jose Maria Domenech US 2003
San Francisco Theatrical Premiere

Balseros tells the story of Cuban refugees who risked their lives in homemade rafts to reach the United States, and what life is like for those who succeeded. Made by Spanish television, the documentary starts in Cuba in the summer of 1994 when political unrest prompted thousands of Cubans to attempt to flee to Miami. The filmmakers filmed and interviewed would-be rafters a few days before their risky venture. Footage of empty rafts on the open sea express the danger these people are willing to risk. After some weeks, Bill Clinton ordered the US Coast Guard to intercept the balseros and take them to a navel base at Guatanamo, where the film crew caught up with them after many months of confinement. When the balseros were finally able to go they dispersed all over the US. Seven years later, the film crew visits them again to discover what their destiny has been in their new country. This is a true story about some authentic survivors of our times; people who are shipwrecked between two worlds. (120m)
