| Big Fish |
Dir. Tim Burton US 2003
Big Fish, is another stylish fairy tale to add to Tim Burton's oeuvre. Burton has always been
interested in outsiders (Pee-Wee,
Edward Scissorshands, Ed Wood) and the dark side. With Big
Fish we are introduced to a kinder, gentler Burton.-many attribute this to his own recent
fatherhood. In Big Fish Burton explores the terrain of father and son relationships.
William Bloom (Billy Crudup) is a man estranged from his dying father, Edward (Albert Finney).
When William returns home to be with his father and mother, Sandy (Jessica Lange) for
the final days he has hope that his dad will cop to his tall tales. In typical
Tim Burton over-the-top production design we see William's past played out by Ewan McGregor
as a young William and Alison Lohman as a young Sandy. Big Fish continues Burton's
love for larger-than-life characters and how fairytales can come true. With Danny Devito,
Steve Buscemi and Helena Bonham Carter.(120m)
