| To Be and To Have |
Dir. Nicolas Philibert France 2003
This lyrical documentary focuses on one year in the life of a teacher and his students
(who range in age from 3 to 11) in a one-room schoolhouse in rural France. Most of the
film focuses on the simple events of the day:learning to read, doing addition and
subtraction, arguing and scuffling during playtime. To Be and To Have has become hugely
successful in France, and its teacher, George Lopez, has become somewhat of a national
celebrity. We see some of the children at home on farms, with their hard working and uneducated
families. This is a destiny it seems they will likely follow and one we learn Lopez escaped.
To Be and To Have has some of the most memorable characters in current cinema. The kids are
likeable, funny and smart without cooing to the camera. And Lopez, with his calm and
sensitive interactions, will certainly be a teacher they
(and you) will never forget. (subtitled; 115m)
