| Elephant |
Dir. Gus Van Sant US 2003
This year Gus Van Sant returned from the big budget world of Hollywood and
created two works, Gerry and Elephant, that are reminiscent of his earlier
works: honest to goodness "art films". Elephant is Van Sant's meditation on
Columbine, the title referring to the elephant in the middle of the room that no one
wants to talk about. But don't think Van Sant is going to present an analysis or offer
any easy answers to explain the events of that day in Colorado. Instead of a realistic
vision of teenagers in their habitat, Elephant is a hyper-stylized, artistic vision
that follows a collection of teen "types" as they navigate the mean streets of the
high school corridor. Van Sant replays interactions and events throughout the day,
experimenting with time and perspective. Shot on location in an Oregon high school
and featuring a cast of non-actors,
Elephant is a beautiful and haunting work. (81m)
