My Flesh and Blood
Dirs. Jonathan Karsh US 2003
My Flesh and Blood is an inspirational portrait of Susan Tom and her 13 adopted children. All of the kids have a variety of diseases and handicaps. They have been given up by their biological families and are considered unadoptable by most. The child who is most problematic is 15-year-old Joe who although full bodied is battling cystic fibrosis and his own emotional demons. Joe's verbal abuse and acting-out put the rest of the family on edge. The family's demands also take their toll on 18-year-old Margaret, who bears much of the care-giving burden. On the other end of the spectrum is Xenia, who navigates her pre-teen life with no legs and tremendous self-esteem. Through all the troubles deep love and joy bond the family. Towards the end of the film Susan remarks "there are always happy times and sad times and stressful times but it's your life and you live it." My Flesh and Blood is a document of true "family values." (84m)
