| The Cooler |
Dir. Wayne Kramer US 2003
The Cooler, with its cool jazz soundtrack, complex characters and gritty realness,
plays like a film from the 1970's. Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy) is a down-on-his-luck l
oser who makes his living as a cooler, a man who can turn people's luck from good to bad,
at the Shangri-La Casino in Vegas. Bernie only has one week left to pay off a long standing
debt to his bullying "best friend" Shelly Kaplow (Alec Baldwin), the owner of the Shangri-La.
Shelly runs the casino the old style way, uninterested in the Disney-fication of the rest
of the strip. This old style extends to the way he deals with people who try to hustle him,
and Bernie has been on the wrong side of Shelly's tough love. Natalie (Maria Bello) rounds
out the trio of losers as a casino waitress who Bernie finds himself falling for. Suddenly,
Lady Luck turns his personal life around for the better (and professional life for the worse).
The Cooler is a gorgeously shot character study of a very dysfunctional "three-of-a-kind."(103m)
