Dir. Pedro Almodovar Spain 2002 The latest film from everyone's favorite Spaniard, Pedro Almodovar (All About My Mother), is less frenetic and kooky than his earlier work, or, dare I say, more mature, but it is still signature Almodovar. Chance encounters, preposterous plot twists, gay and straight relationships, passion - all the familiar terrain gets covered. Almodovar is in love with performance and uses it as a device to tell his story whether it is a dance sequence, a bullfight, a performance by Brazilian superstar Caetano Veloso, or the simple rise and fall of a theater curtain.
