The Machinist
Dir. Brad Anderson US 2004
Christian Bale is no stranger to playing creepy roles. In American Psycho he portrayed a Wall Street sociopath. In The Machinist, Bale does what Robert DeNiro did in Raging Bull but in reverse, losing an estimated 60 pounds to play the skeletal-framed insomniac, Trevor Reznick. After a gruesome accident at the machine shop for which he is held responsible, Trevor thinks there is a conspiracy against him. An omnipresent stranger, menacing post-its, and bizarre hallucinations compound his paranoia. Anderson (Sessions 9) bumps up the creepiness level with machine-metal cinematography; an unknown urban landscape; and a 50's style sci-fi horror score (complete with Theremin). The Machinist comes on a bit Lynchian with its mixture of the "normal" and the surreal. (101m)
