Capturing the Friedmans
Dir. Andrew Jarecki US 2003
The phrase "the tears of a clown" never seemed more appropriate than in reference to Capturing the Friedmans. Filmmaker Jarecki's original documentary about NYC clowns shifted when he met David Friedman, aka Silly Billy. David's anger led Jarecki to another story, more tragic than comic. In 1987 David's younger brother, Jesse, and his father, Arnie, a respected teacher, were accused of child molestation. With the use of home movies and an abundance of video footage shot by David, Capturing the Friedmans is the ultimate reality show, documenting the dynamic of a family unraveling - from goofing around to screaming fights of monstrously dysfunctional proportion. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, Capturing the Friedmans is a fascinating film that asks more questions about legal misconduct, community hysteria, and the complexity of memory than it answers.
