Dir. Stephen Frears UK 2003
Stephen Frears (The Grifters, My Beautiful Laundrette) is no stranger to creating films that deal with people living on the margins of society. In Dirty Pretty Things, he immerses us in the lives of illegal immigrants who work back-to-back shifts at menial labor jobs and are invisible to the rest of society. Okwe (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is a doctor from Nigeria who works as a hotel desk clerk. Senay (Audrey Tautou) is a Turkish refugee who works under the table as a chambermaid. After finding a human heart in one of the hotel room toilets, Okwe uncovers a scandal that makes him realize what lengths some people will go to in order to achieve asylum. Frears' London feels authentic, a place where multi-racial people co-exist and hope for a better life, unable to live in the countries of their birth, but not making it in their adopted country either.
