Dir. Paul Hough US 2002
The Backyard explores the phenomenon of backyard wrestling. Meet The Lizard, Chaos, Scar, Heartless and Sic. They inhabit this violent and sometimes bizarre world where lightbulbs, fire, barbed wire, thumbtacks, mousetraps and glass are weapons of choice. The Lizard has ambitions to become a professional wrestler. Others are just out to kick butt and bleed...a lot. Although backyard wrestling is popular in lower income communities, college bound upper-middle class kids are doing it too.As one teacher comments, they could be sitting around smoking dope but instead they are hitting each other on the heads with garbage cans. And that's a good thing? Supporters and detractors debate the merits of the "sport". Although backyard wrestling is easy to dismiss as another violent pastime for bored teens, the film raises some interesting questions regarding healing inner pain by externalizing it physically.(80m)
