Dirs. Justine Shapiro, B.Z. Goldberg, Carlos Bolado US 2001
Perhaps one of the most relevant films of the year, Promises focuses on
seven Palestinian and Israeli children between the ages of 9-13. Filmed
during 1995-1998, a brief period between the Intifada (Palestinian uprising)
and the current turmoil, Promises deals with the religious and national
conflicts that have shaped these children's lives. The children speak
directly and without self-censorship and are both true mirrors of their
cultures and spokespeople for future generations of Israelis and
Palestinians. Each child offers a dramatic, emotional and sometimes
hilarious insight into what it's like to grow up in the charged and complex
city of Jerusalem. These are real, multi-dimensional people, not simple
stereotypes perpetuated by the mainstream media. Though they live only 20
minutes apart, the seven children exist in completely separate worlds; the
physical, historical and emotional obstacles between them run deep. Promises
explores the nature of these boundaries and tells the story of a few
children who dare to cross the lines to meet their neighbors. (106m)
