Dir. Murray Lerner US 2001 This film is the definitive document of Jimi Hendrix at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, an event whose chaos was perfectly captured by Lerner in his previous documentary, Message to Love. Re-edited, and with magnificently remastered sound and enhanced image, Blue Wild Angel focuses mainly on Jimi Hendrix and includes never-before-seen footage. After a series of interviews (including the organizers of the festival, bassist Billy Cox and drummer Mitch Mitchell) Jimi, ever the voodoo child, floats towards the stage with afro and dayglo cosmic kimono and at some ungodly hour of the AM, proceeds to do his thing. He constantly cues his bandmates, banters with the blissed-out crowd, plays the wild man on "Foxy Lady," struggles with the sound system, and pours his heart out on his trademark Stratocaster. He also melds with a rarely used Gibson Flying V for a hypnotically rendered "Red House" and two other numbers. Most of this performance hasn't been shown before (he plays a total of 18 songs) and the abundance of front-and-center fret-work is amazing. This is Jimi's last recorded performance (he died 18 days later), making this an important addition to his legacy. While there's plenty here for all, Hendrix worshippers will be ecstatic.(102m) |
