| The Warriors |
Dir. Walter Hill US 1979
When this cult
classic was released in 1979, America was just pulling itself out of
Vietnam, mindless disco ruled and punk rock was at its nihilistic peak.
In N.Y.C., the South Bronx was burning out of control because firemen
refused to go into such a dangerous neighborhood. Set in a sort
of post-apocalyptic, pre-Giuliani N.Y., and peppered with lots of
"can you dig it², The Warriors is a highly entertaining
and nostalgic artifact of this era. Itıs one long night for
The Warriors, a groovy gang of leather-vests who stand falsely
accused of assassinating the charismatic leader of New Yorkıs
biggest street gang. As they fight their way from the Bronx to
their home turf of Coney Island, our boys are attacked by an
amazing array of gangs, each sporting their own special
fashion statement: from flowing purple pimps to old-time gangsters,
an all-girl gang called The (ahem) Lizzies, a bunch of evil-looking
mimes, and the famous Baseball Furies. (93m)
